For many years, the main problem in the dental caries management was leakage along the edges that would occur due to insufficient bonding of the filling with the surface of dental tissue. This problem was solved by introducing dentine adhesive systems, whose main role is the mechanical and chemical bonding of the composite material with the tooth. In order to make this possible, it is necessary to change the properties of the surface of the tooth.

By binding to the tooth surface, adhesives also seal that surface and provide biochemical protection of the pulp, thereby reducing the need for placing the substrate, thus protecting the pulp from chemical and bacterial influences.
