Dental implant is a small, strong, titanium screw with the purpose of replacing the function of the lost tooth root (one or more of them).
The implants are installed into the bone and have the same characteristics as a natural tooth, thus helping to improve the functionality of the mouth. Titanium screws replace the natural tooth root, we place them in the jaw and they remain in the mouth for a lifetime. The implants have a cylindrical or conical shape, a diameter from 3.5 to 7 mm, and a length from 6 to 17 mm. The first procedure (the placement of a titanium screw into the bone) begins after making the treatment plan. We can see the result of the first procedure only 3 to 6 months later after we determine whether the bone tissue began coalescing with the implant, incorporating it into its structure. The first stage of implant placement, called osseointegration, lasts about 6 months, after which it is possible to complete the treatment. Abutments on implants are used for fitting crowns on the implants, bridges on the implants, or can serve as carriers of complete upper and lower dentures. The patient is required to perform proper oral hygiene at least twice a day, and to visit the dental office for regular checkups every 6 months. Such an approach to the procedure, in combination with a responsible approach of the patient, is the basis for the best result of implant surgery. MATERIALS WE USE IN OUR OFFICE Titanium is the material of choice for the manufacture of implants, primarily because it is highly compatible, i.e. our body does not recognize it as a foreign body. Once the implant is placed in the oral cavity, it coalesces with the bone and they become one body. In our office, we use ANKYLOS implants, a product of the renowned German company Dentsply Friaden. The implant surface is roughened, covered with titanium oxide, in order to facilitate the screw growing into the bone. In this way the recovery and fixation of the “new root” is much safer.
